Dr. Kap C. Kim, MD, age 91, passed away peacefully at home in Sterling, IL on February 2, 2026, with family by his side. Kap was born on January 1,1935 in Seoul, South Korea, the son of Yong Chan Kim and Young Seung Lee. He married Youn Hae Lee on April 29, 1967 in Grosse Pointe, MI, and she preceded him in passing on October 14, 2020.
Kap earned his M.D. from Seoul National University, College of Medicine. He completed his internship at Bon Secours Hospital, residency in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine at Detroit General Hospital, and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics.
Kap enjoyed reading, fishing, spending time in nature, watching baseball, following current events, listening to classical and folk music, and enjoying his favorite Korean cuisine. He was deeply dedicated to his work as a pediatrician, providing compassionate care to his patients at Sterling-Rock Falls Clinic from 1972 until his retirement in 2009. He was known for his gentle manner, clinical skill, and sincere compassion for those he treated. Above all, he cherished his family and will be remembered for his wisdom, kindness, and quiet devotion to those he loved.
He is survived by his son, David, and daughter, Susan, both of Sterling, as well as nieces and nephews in the United States and South Korea.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Youn Hae Kim; his daughter, Alice Kim; his parents, Yong Chan Kim and Young Seung Lee; his brothers, Woo Choong Kim and Chul Choong Kim; his sisters, Kyung Ja Kim, Kyung Sook Kim, Kyung Hi Kim, and Kyung Wha Kim.
The family extends special thanks to the staff at CGH Medical Center, CGH Main Clinic, OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, and Gaffey Home Nursing and Hospice for their compassionate care and support.
A private family service will be held at McDonald Funeral Home in Sterling, and burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the CGH Health Foundation.
